Today Smashing Magazine closed its forum, due to lack in members, activity and (i think thats the biggest part) poor (not existent) SEO Visibility. There have been reasons for that:
none existent promo
SEO abuse by 1-post-members
I think after all the downfall was the lack of commitment to the Project as whole which i see as a huge let down, considered what SM (try) to stand for.

I came across your post after a Google search to see why I couldn’t find a link to the forum anywhere. I’m surprised SM didn’t make a post about the closure (or if they did Google sure isn’t showing it).
Twitter and Facebook are fast killing off forums though.

They gave some free books away at the start and it was looking promising, but like you say, it lacked commitment from the team. Too bad they didn’t make use of the powerful community they have, by appointing some mods.
They also didn’t make any announcement regarding the closure and that proves your point. I, just like Dinu, found this while googling for “smashing magazine forum closed”. Strange communication from such a big name…

Same here. Did a google search for the SM forum. What a let down. Also 24-7media.de also closed their forum. I am back on the search for a dedicated design forum. Any Ideas?

Hey Ginger, good question, http://www.sitepoint.com/ is good i guess – but I don’t really “feel at home” there

This one is actually not bad. http://www.killersites.com/community/
24-7 was actually my fav. I learned quite a bit from those guys over the years. From Video to CSS, Graphic Design, After Effects 3D… They were the best. oh well so long Ingo =)

I always found the Smashing Magazine forums very helpful. It’s a shame that they closed it as it had a lot of potential and the knowledge of the users was unsurpassed

Did they open up a new forum? I cannot imagine that they just shut the doors.
